Subject: Thank You Decatur Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Project Volunteers!

Thank you so much for your efforts to help our senior citizens during the 2010 Decatur Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Project. I appreciate all of your hard work over the weekend. On behalf of the Decatur Preservation Alliance, DPA’s executive director Susan Cobleigh, the DPA board of directors, the City of Decatur, the MLK planning committee, and the senior citizens who were helped, I would also like to extend their heartfelt thank you.

Approximately 1,200 volunteers turned out to provide home repairs and yard work for Decatur’s senior citizens in spite of some rainy weather. A total of 13 homes were repaired. Most of those homes and an additional 37 had yard work for a total of 50 homes. In addition, volunteers did yard work at nearby homes of people with disabilities.

An incredible amount of work was done during the three-day weekend, including but not limited to:

  • Handicap ramp built.
  • Moisture infiltration issues alleviated and damage repaired to prevent health issues from mold and mildew.
  • Completely rebuilt steps, handrails and landings outside two homes to allow back door access.
  • Installed smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Performed numerous plumbing and electrical repairs. Many of the skilled tradespeople worked on the project the entire weekend.
  • Repaired and replaced caulking.
  • Replaced old light bulbs with new energy efficient ones.
  • Increased seniors’ safety by repairing and replacing doors and door hardware and locks, as well as repairing and replacing windows and fixing broken window locks.

Volunteers did numerous weatherization projects with assistance from volunteers with the nonprofit organization Southface Energy Institute. These projects include:

  • Air-sealed attics in preparation of R-30 cellulose insulation at 8 homes.
  • Weatherstripped doors.
  • Cut in gable vents for attic ventilation.
  • Insulated ductwork and air handlers.
  • Insulated water pipes for energy efficiency and freeze protection.

Thank you for helping these seniors to live more safely, comfortably and economically in their homes as a result of these much needed repairs and yard work. We look forward to you joining us during the next Decatur Martin Luther King, Jr. Service project, which will take place January 15, 16, and 17, 2011.

Thanks!

Lee Ann

Lutheran and Episcopal Campus Ministry at Agnes Scott College

Holy Trinity Parish in cooperation with the Lutheran Church of the Messiah offer regular opportunities for students to come together for fellowship, worship, and service. We call this group the Rose and Shield. Every Wednesday at noon we gather for an informal Eucharist in the first conference room on the first floor of the cafeteria on ASC campus. Various other opportunities for fellowship and service will be offered throughout the year.

We could use your help with transportation, meals, and program ideas. A woman’s time in college can be an amazing opportunity for growth and experimentation. It is also a time of discovering one’s own values and beliefs. What we as a parish can offer these women is a safe place to grow into who God calls them to be. We invite you to join us in this vital ministry.

Blood Drive

At least one Sunday a year, our Parish hosts a LifeSouth blood drive (http://www NULL.lifesouth NULL.org/). Blood donors and volunteers to assist are needed. Contact David Probst (probst@htparish.com) for more information.
